On Sat July 12th we arrived in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and would stay there for six nights. We picked this town because it is near the lavender fields and also looked so appealing. It was a textile center back in the day, The river that comes through the town has been diverted through several canals that then power the waterwheels which have been kept intact, still there, paddling away.

The town is a destination for the French for their holidays and Monday would be Bastille Day. So the French were on a three day weekend. And they were there in droves. It was all very festive.

We've now spent enough time in Europe to no longer be particularly stunned when a little bitty town no one has ever heard of has this magnificent place of worship. The textile business must have been pretty good back then.
It was also market day. Knowing the restaurants would be overflowing for the next few days we stocked up. Can anybody out there cook an octopus?

I've mentioned in previous posts that our main reason for driving all the way down here from Paris was to photograph the lavender fields. They were mostly an hour or so to the east and north but a few of them were much closer. So we decider to dive right in. The Abbey of Notre Dame de Senanque is an iconic site for photographing the lavender.

On the way home we stopped at the hilltop town of Gordes for a sunset shot and a selfie. The drone came in handy again.

Tomorrow, more lavender. But now back to the lovely L'Isle for some dinner.
